Lumianire

The Luminaire collection draws inspiration from Britain’s long history of scientific glass production. Showcasing extraordinary skill, innovation and beauty from this hidden and now challenged ‘secret’ industry.

Through an exploratory design process, I look to breathe a different spirit into the glass waste, delivering novel materials and ‘power’ objects. New connections made possible by structural, jewel-like objects, liberated from the machine and diverted from landfill to be worn on the body.

The act of reimagining materials which cannot be used for their original intended purpose, emphasising the value of imperfection and highlights opportunities for circularity across different disciplines. The addition of fine jewellery materials blurs the line between (mass) production and high craft.

Challenging value hierarchies and the notion of perfection to offer a surprising visual lexicon – one which feels at once strangely familiar and yet unexpected. A glimpse of exciting possibilities for future cross discipline collaborations, supporting a broader remit for ‘at risk’ heritage crafts.

Working with unwanted precision engineered materials, my goal is to use what is deemed to be 'unrecyclable' and would otherwise go to landfill. This happens when parts are either too small or in the case of this collection, physically attached to other materials. This renders the glass unable to remelted or reused.

I look to transform this material into something desirable which can be worn on the body. Using glass components extracted from the machine and combining them with precious materials and jewelley techniques their life can be extended to create something to be treasured.
